holding on

as i unpacked my suitcase after coming home from my first year at college, i pulled out all the books i’d never had the time to read and all the clothes i’d never had the occasion to wear. there was a strange, throbbing sadness rippling through my fingers. however, the saddest moment came when i held my camera, turning it in my hands. a beautiful canon 1100D with a 50 mm f/1.8 lens; i had barely used it all semester.

about a year ago, you could not have wrenched me away from my camera - ‘nigel’, as i dubbed it - if you used a crowbar. it was my brand new toy and it hung around my neck like an appendage. i took pictures of everything - everything. babies, cupcakes, leaf structures, puddles, curtains, but especially food. i found foodgawker and was drawn to it like a moth to the light. food photography is my passion, i claimed. so was baking. i had hoped (naive seventeen-year-old that i was) that i could continue baking in college, and even keep a blog about it.

photography is not, i realize, something i can neglect for a long time without losing interest. the more pictures i take, the more i find that this is something i love to do: to capture moments in time that when added up, don’t even make up a minute; to find the glow in ordinary things like milk jugs, ribbons, cookies; to snap someone smiling like they mean it.

this summer, and next year, i pledge to take more pictures. not just of food, but of people especially - real, beautiful people, created in the image of their beautiful Creator.

adding to the list

of things to read this summer:

  • how to read the bible for all its worth, gordon d. fee & douglas stuart
